Between Fences

Nov. 3 to Dec. 15, 2007

The Smithsonian comes to the Homestead

The Wisconsin Humanities Council selected the Stahl-Conrad Homestead  to host a traveling exhibit created by the Smithsonian Institution.  The exhibit, Between Fences, will be at the Homestead November 3 through December 15, 2007.  It is free and open to the public.

Between Fences is a cultural history that explores themes of land use, boundaries defining public and private spaces, and the boundaries of human relationships.  The exhibit’s kiosks will be placed in the Homestead’s historic house and barn.

Local partners that will offer complementary programs include Hales Corners Lutheran School, Whitnall Public Schools, the Hales Corners Library, the Village of Hales Corners, the Hales Corners Historical Society, the Milwaukee Area Land Conservancy, and the Hales Corners Chamber of Commerce.   For more information, or to volunteer, please leave a message at 414-858-9195.

October 31, 2007  7 p.m. The Fences Between Us: A look back at regional cooperation in
Milwaukee County
The speaker will be John Gurda, well-known historian and author of The Making of Milwaukee.
According to Gurda, "Milwaukee-area residents haven't always gotten along. From the Bridge War of 1845 to the city-suburban conflicts of the 1950s, friction has always been at least as common as friendship in our region.  But hope springs eternal.  Recent developments offer hope that we might at last be learning from past mistakes."

November 14, 2007  7 p.m.  The Surly Surveyor
The speaker will be  Rob Nurre, Land Records Manager with the Wisconsin Board of Commissioners of  Public Lands.  Mr.  Nurre will portray a surveyor wearing period attire and using antique instruments.

November 28, 2007  7 p.m.  Crossbucks on the Corners: A history of Milwaukee's Rapid Transit
lines through Hales Corners
The speaker will be John Giove of the Milwaukee Transit Archives and Museum.  This program is sponsored by the Hales Corners Chamber of Commerce.
